On November 5, 2024, Karak Climate Action (KCA) took a significant step toward fostering a climate-conscious future in Karak by meeting with both the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) and the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Karak. This effort, led by KCA's CEO and Founder Haseeb Ahmad Khattak, marked a collaborative moment for raising awareness about climate change impacts on Karak and advocating for necessary policy changes. Alongside him were President Sohail Ahmad, Vice Presidents Muhammad Zarar and Salman Durani, and board members Aryan Mehmood, Ahmad Nasir, and Muhammad Faizan, all passionate about the cause.
π️ Meeting with ADC Karak: Key Highlights and Insights π️
Our first meeting was with the ADC of Karak, where the KCA team presented a detailed overview of the climate challenges facing our district. The discussion focused on four critical issues affecting Karak due to climate change:
π₯ Rising Temperatures: Karak has experienced extreme heat in recent years, making it difficult for residents to maintain their health, livelihoods, and overall well-being.
π§️ Unpredictable Rainfall: Rainfall patterns have shifted dramatically, causing both unexpected flooding and drought, which disrupts agriculture and threatens food security.
πΏ Soil Erosion: As rain patterns change, Karak’s soil suffers severe erosion, which reduces arable land and impacts local farmers’ livelihoods.
π Flood Risks: Increased and irregular rainfall has heightened the risk of floods, affecting housing, infrastructure, and transportation across the district.
Each of these issues requires urgent attention, and the ADC was keen to listen as we explained the severity of these challenges. He appreciated KCA’s commitment to addressing these issues head-on, even though he noted some of our technical questions were beyond his jurisdiction. One of our main concerns—the absence of an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) representative—also limited the depth of the conversation on regulatory actions.
However, the ADC extended his best wishes and pledged to support KCA’s initiatives, expressing that our work was essential to securing Karak’s future. This engagement underscored the importance of a collaborative approach, where local authorities, environmental organizations, and communities work hand-in-hand to address climate change.
π Meeting with DC Karak: Seeking Commitments and Collaboration π
Following our constructive conversation with the ADC, the KCA team proceeded to meet with the DC of Karak. We approached this meeting with a goal of understanding the local government’s stance on environmental challenges and exploring potential commitments to concrete actions.
The DC showed interest in our proposals and the concerns raised; however, there were notable gaps in responses to several of our pressing questions. This outcome underscored the complex nature of climate issues, especially when there is limited infrastructure and support for environmental policies at the local level. The absence of an EPA office in Karak was once again a significant topic of concern. Without local EPA representation, Karak lacks essential resources for monitoring environmental changes, enforcing regulations, and responding to urgent environmental hazards.
Yet, even with these limitations, the DC recognized the critical need for climate action and praised KCA’s persistent advocacy. We took this as a positive signal that, with further dialogue and efforts, we might see more government support for environmental initiatives in the future.
π± Moving Forward: KCA’s Roadmap for Climate Action in Karak π±
Our meetings with both the ADC and DC were crucial first steps in pushing climate awareness and action to the forefront of local governance in Karak. At KCA, we are driven by a vision of a sustainable and resilient Karak, where communities are informed, empowered, and supported in their efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
Moving forward, we aim to:
Release an Official Statement: KCA will publish a formal statement summarizing the key points discussed in our meetings with the ADC and DC, as well as our vision for addressing Karak’s climate challenges.
Advocate for EPA Representation: The need for an EPA office in Karak has become more apparent than ever. KCA plans to continue advocating for local EPA representation to strengthen environmental governance in our district.
Engage Communities: Beyond working with government officials, we believe that climate action must start within our communities. KCA plans to launch educational campaigns to raise awareness about sustainable practices, aiming to involve local communities in reducing their carbon footprint and adapting to changing environmental conditions.
Collaborate with Regional Leaders: While we value the support from Karak’s local authorities, KCA also seeks to collaborate with regional environmental organizations and policymakers to amplify our impact and explore funding opportunities for climate resilience projects.
Our team remains hopeful that by building on the positive momentum from these meetings, we can pave the way for long-term environmental change in Karak. Climate change is a complex challenge, but with the right mix of government support, community engagement, and targeted action, we believe Karak can emerge as a model of resilience and sustainability in Pakistan.
π Together for a Greener, Resilient Karak π
As we continue our journey, we invite everyone in Karak and beyond to join hands with KCA in our mission. Whether through participating in our initiatives, supporting policy advocacy, or simply adopting more eco-friendly practices, every contribution counts. Together, let’s ensure a brighter, greener future for Karak!
